| DESIGN PROCESS AUDIT |
The hallmark of any good engineering department is the use and application of a solid and proven design process.
By documenting and mapping the steps and tools used in development of components and products, the task
of understanding where to best apply Research and Development resources becomes much easier.
One very effective manner to achieve management-mandated cost reductions is cycle time reduction.
By reducing the time required to perform necessary engineering functions, time-to-market and cost-to-market can be reduced.
Examples of possible areas for such cycle-time reductions are:
- Effective design data management through the use of integrated design tools.
- Automation of repetitive design and analysis functions.
- Development of new tools that bridge "1-D" quick-analysis capabilities with advanced 3-D-based "final design" tools.
- Application of Six Sigma methodologies such as Robust Design and Design of Experiments (DOE) to reduce design iterations.
But how does an organization go about trying to achieve this? Especially when all the resources are already tied up with the existing slow and ineffective process?
